Grand Theft Auto VI is the first mainline game in the series with two playable protagonists you can switch between: Jason and Lucia. Here's what the Extended Look confirmed about how it works.
Two leads, most of the time together
- Jason and Lucia appear together on the majority of story missions.
- You can play the open world as the pair, or focus on one of them.

Switch between Jason and Lucia on the fly.
Switching on the fly
- The Extended Look showed control passing between the two during action — for example, in a police chase one character drives while the other shoots, then you swap.
- It builds on the character-switching Rockstar introduced in Grand Theft Auto V, but centred on the Jason-and-Lucia relationship.
Other things shown alongside it
- A morality system that reacts to how you treat the world.
- On-the-fly outfit changes through a radial wheel.
- Red Dead-style interaction prompts.

Verified switching additions
The detailed preview confirms switching in the open world: play as Jason, Lucia, or the pair together. When they share a vehicle, control can move between driver and passenger without leaving free roam, allowing one protagonist to drive while the other uses the phone or shoots during a pursuit.
When the pair are separated, the switch uses a zoom transition. The character menu also presents their individual Criminal Profiles and shared relationship status.
