Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026. Here's everything you need to be playing the moment it unlocks: the key dates, what's known about the unlock time and download size, and a checklist for the week before.

What time does GTA 6 unlock?
Rockstar hasn't announced an unlock hour. What we know:
- Pre-orders opened at local midnight on June 25, and pre-loading starts at local midnight on November 12.
- Store listings point to the game unlocking at midnight local time in each region on November 19 — so New Zealand and Australia would be first and the Americas last.
Treat local midnight as likely but unofficial. Your console's store page will show the exact time once pre-loading begins, and we'll update this guide as soon as it's confirmed.
How big is the download?
Rockstar hasn't published a size, and sizes on fan sites are guesses. The real number will appear in your download queue on November 12. Expect a day-one patch on top, as with most big releases.
Our advice: free up a lot of space now — we'd clear at least 200 GB as a cautious buffer (our estimate, not an official figure). Things to know:
- PS5: games must be on the internal SSD or an M.2 expansion SSD to play. USB drives can store PS5 games but not run them.
- Xbox Series X|S: games must be on the internal SSD or an official expansion card to play. USB drives can store them but not run them.
Pre-launch checklist
- Pre-order digitally, or redeem your box code early. Codes redeemed before launch pre-load from November 12.
- Check your region. On PlayStation, codes must match your account's region; Xbox codes aren't region-locked.
- Clear storage on your internal drive or expansion SSD.
- Let your console download while asleep. On PS5 turn on Stay connected to the internet in Rest Mode settings; on Xbox, choose the Sleep power mode and keep games up to date automatically.
- Redeem your free month of GTA+ if you pre-ordered digitally — it's instantly redeemable.
- Decide on the Ultimate Edition. You can buy the upgrade at any time — before or after launch. Editions compared.

Boxed copies: what's in the box
There's no disc. The box contains a download code for the game and the Vintage Vice City Pack, and retailers can ship or hand over boxes from November 12 so codes can pre-load. You'll need an internet connection to download the game.
